Ligo Dojo Takes Five Places in 7 Divisions at
First Annual Kyokushin-kan Semi-Contact
Tournament
Middletown , Connecticut - Sept. 20, 2008

Ligo Dojo students from left to right: Amy Kaufman, Bajon Aatnite, Eire Aatnite, (Nathan Ligo), Quion Davis, Amy Wolff, Paul Kaminski, and Greg Pattison.

Eire Aatnite (right), 16, was bumped up to the green-brown belt division since there weren't competitors in the teen girls' white-yellow belt division. Nevertheless, she beat two green-belt girls by "ippon" (TKO) in the first round to take first place in her division.

Her brother, Bajon Aatnite (right),13, took first place in his division, teen boys white-yellow.

27-year-old Quion Davis (right) weighs 270 pounds and has been anxiously looking forward to his first chance to compete ever since he joined us more than two years ago. Although he's been with Ligo Dojo for a long time, his work schedule has prevented him from training as frequently as we would like. Accordingly, he might have be the least-trained member of our team, but he took 3rd place in his divison anyway, crushing his opponent here and earning the nickname "Ghost Dog" for the way that he patiently stood and waited for his opponent to realize that he couldn't hurt him before he started throwing his own techniques. Remember that our Orange Belt is only the first level after white. Blue comes next and then yellow. It was the first tournament for everyone on the Ligo Dojo team except for Paul Kaminski (see below).

Amy Wolff (left), 36, didn't get to throw the jumping back-kick she's gotten so famous for in our dojo, but won anyway! First place for adult women, white-yellow belts.

Greg Pattison (above, right), 30, and Paul Kaminski (below, left), 24, fought well but did not win their fights. Be sure expecially to see Paul Kaminski's fight on the video clip. He was fighing in the adult male black-belt division, so you should see what the top fighters were like at this small, first-time tournament.

Amy Kaufman (right), 37, was bumped up into the black belt adult women's division due to lack of green-belt participants. She won one fight and lost another to take 2nd place.

We were delayed by Friday afternoon traffic north of New York City on the way up. The drive took 15 hours in two cars. On the way south, however, we got up Sunday morning at 5:30, drove down to the city, and took an 8 AM ferry to Liberty Island for a little sightseeing. The return drive from New York took ten hours and we were home Sunday night by nine. It was a remarkably successful weekend and these seven students all expressed interest in future tournaments.
