(see new Young Warriors Program link above for Community Referral Forms)
Budo Karate House is a legal D.B.A. (doing business as) name for the government-recognized, 501.c.3 nonprofit corporation, "Society for the Betterment of the Human Condition through the Training, Instruction and Propagation of Budo Karate" with Public Charity status. It was founded in February of 1999 by Nathan Ligo with the intention of working with an initial group of young men to make them into instructors of Budo Karate so that they might influence other young men in America on a much wider scale in the future towards ideals of physical, mental and spiritual strength. Ligo Dojo, a 501.c.3 nonprofit, got all four of the grants it applied for for next year. And it's about time!! We have persisted for 9 years without external funding. Special thanks to the Governor's Crime Commission ($70,000 over two years), Triangle Community Foundation ($15,000 gift), Juvenile Crime Prevention Council (Durham County) ($12,000 gift), and the City of Durham ($40,000 over three years) for their joint sponsorship of the "Young Warriors Scholar-Athlete Scholarship Program" in which children who are at-risk of falling into anti-social routines can train, without charge at Ligo Dojo (provided they are referred by participating agencies). This program is already in full-swing and is resulting in unprecedented growth in our student body. On the behalf of Budo Karate House and Ligo Dojo, I would like to express my deepest appreciation to these agencies for recognizing the incredible value that Ligo Dojo can provide for the future of Durham by teaching its young people. You have put your eggs in the right basket! Our program is in full swing and we will surpass our stated goals! By law, the financial and incorporation records of a 501.c.3 nonprofit corporation are a matter of public record and can be looked up. By law no one can profit from the earnings of a 501.c.3 nonprofit corporation and all transactions are very carefully scrutinized. Although BKH has entitled its director to a salary (and several years of back salary), these public records will show that no salaries have been paid to date (as of October 2005), as Nathan Ligo has consistently chosen to waive his own salary in order to allocate those earnings to the BKH mission of supporting and instructing his students. Ligo Dojo of Budo Karate is the first dojo -- of what we hope will be many -- opened by Budo Karate House. It is consequently "part" of Budo Karate House (the nonprofit corporation) and it is bound by the same laws prohibiting profit that apply to BKH as a whole. Can you offer assistance to BKH? Your donations mean more than you can possibly imagine. budokaratehouse@hotmail.com Budo Karate House The Kyokushin Karate-Do Foundation, Kyokushinkan, is a separate nonprofit organization (similarly recognized by the Japanese government as their equilvalent of a 501.c.3) whose mission is to spread Mas Oyama's Budo Karate in order to strengthen the minds and bodies of young people through karate training and foster ideals paramount to achieving world peace. Nathan Ligo's position of "Branch Chief" of Kyokushinkan in the United States, therefore, is complementary and not at all in conflict with his position as Director of BKH. The only financial transactions that occur between BKH and Kyokushinkan are rank certification and tournament entry fees. Below is a copy and transcription of a recent AP newspaper article describing one of BKH's recent community outreach projects:
